August 20, 2020 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

Queen Elizabeth II! You know her name but what else do you know? You can get to know the woman behind the images, her sense of humor and savvy intelligence. Dr. Leslie Goddard will reveal the life of Britain’s famous monarch, including her childhood, the abdication of her uncle, her marriage, her World War II service and her struggle to balance her roles as queen and mother.

Afternoon Tea (Lunch) will be served at 11:30 A.M. prior to the presentation at The Outing Club, Davenport, on Thursday, August 20. The cost of the meal and presentation is $22.00, and you can register at 563-441-4001 for Class 9888. This portrayal is funded by a Quad-City Plus 60 Grant.

When she was born April 21, 1926 as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, she was named Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. She is married to her second cousin, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark. She has four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. When her father died in February 1952, she became the head of the Commonwealth and Queen Regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon. Her coronation was in 1953 and she has celebrated her Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees in 1977, 2002 and 2012. She is the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch and has become the first monarch to reach a Sapphire Jubilee. She has suffered losses and embarrassments but her personal popularity and public support remain consistently high. As monarch, she celebrates two birthdays, April 21 and the official celebration on the second Saturday of June. Have you ever wondered why she always carries a purse? According to sources, she carries her reading glasses, a handkerchief, mints, a fountain pen, a small mirror, lipstick and a metal make-up case which Prince Philip gave her. Register and learn more about this fascinating woman.
