EICC: Tai Chi, a Gentle Path to improving Physical/Mental Health

Tai Chi may be the perfect exercise for senior health. It is low intensity with no physical contact. It is known as Meditation in Motion. Movements are slow, smooth and continuous. It has been proven to improve balance and to reduce the risk of falling. The United States Centers for Disease Control approve Tai Chi as a proven “evidence-based” fall prevention program. Experts from the Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend and endorse Tai Chi to improve health.
In addition to improving balance, Tai Chi also improves flexibility, endurance and strength, especially in the hips, legs, shoulders, diaphragm and deep stabilizer muscles. Many participants show improved cardiovascular efficiency and experience less stress and tension.
Tai Chi originated in China as a martial arts routine and evolved into a method to improve health and meditation. Modern methods of Tai Chi are fun and easy to do. It can be done indoors or outdoors, with or without music, alone or in a group. The logical starting point is Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention, which consists of 12 movements from the Sun-Style. It was designed by Dr. Paul Lam and a team of medical experts to improve an individual’s health and is standardized throughout the world.
Registration for Tuesday Classes
So how do you learn Tai Chi? Eastern Iowa Community College offers beginner classes in Bettendorf and Davenport, taught by Ame Irving. The classes are once a week for eight weeks from 10:30 – 11:30 am and the tuition is $29. The Tuesday class begins August 11, 2020 (Class ID 9761) at Scott Community College, West Davenport Center, 1509 Fairmount Street, Davenport.
