SCC Seminar: Poets and Painters of the Prairies

October 25, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

When the Black Hawk Treaty opened the Louisiana Purchase to the first legal white settlement west of the Mississippi River, north of the Missouri Line –poets, painters, Princes and writers of note from around the world flocked to the “Far, far, West” (Iowa) to capture the last vestiges of the frontier before Indian removal changed the face of the untamed forever. Join us as we float 2,000 miles down river with world famous artist Henry Lewis as he paints his 1,250 ft. hand-cranked rolling Mississippi River panorama: encamp with George Catlin on the Prospect Terrace Overlook in Davenport; wander the tall grass prairies with naturalist poet Wm. Cullen Bryant; or witness world famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s hasty retreat from remote Spillville, Iowa (54 miles northwest of Prairie du Chien) after his teenage daughter fell in love with the local Indian Medicine Man.
