SCC Seminar: Caveman of Stubbs Eddy

You will want to be one of the first to sign up for the next great lunch and learn with Plus 60 and Scott Community College that is scheduled Thursday, May 9th. This is a two-part program; the first is an informative luncheon at the Outing Club that starts at 11:30 AM. The speaker will be our own, well-known and loved Karen Anderson. Her knowledge of the area’s history is legendary, and her topics are always of great interest. The cost of the lunch is $22.
The topic Karen will speak to us about is the treacherous 14-mile stretch of the Mississippi River beginning in LeClaire, and ending in the Village of East Davenport. This area, a gift from the ice age, is known today as the Mississippi Trench. Learn all about the life of a steamboat captain, James R. Stubbs, the caveman of Stubbs Eddy. Additionally, Karen will tell us about the rainbow waterfalls, artesian springs spouting into the air, 15 – 40 foot high rock cliffs along the banks of the river, and a 100 foot deep cave which the Indians believed was inhabited by the enchanted spirit of the Great White Swan. You will be in awe of all the unique information learned.
The second part of this program is an actual tour of The Great White Swan cave, located in Rock Island, followed by a visit to the Corps’ Mississippi River Museum. Here you will have a private viewing of their rare collection of Henry Bosse river prints. They show the river in its’ untamed state, before the locks and dams. You will also have a tour of Augustana College’s Fryxell Geology Museum, one of the most outstanding in the midwest. The cost for the second part is $14.00. You may choose one or both.
