Pella Tulip Festival – Tiptoe Through the Tulips!
Even if you can’t, or don’t play the ukulele, and you are not currently thinking about tiptoeing through anything, it might be a good time to put this Plus 60 and Tri-State Travel trip on your list!
Thursday, May 2, 2019 is still a few months away, but if you have only gotten on the “wait list” before, don’t put off making your reservation for the 2019 Tulip Festival in Pella, Iowa. You will be picked up in either Davenport or Moline, and then head directly for Pella, Iowa where a tradition of more than 80 years awaits you.
The day is to be enjoyed at your leisure, and at your own pace. Included is a homemade lunch at the Trinity Reformed Church. The menu in the past has included your choice of ham or roast beef, mashed potatoes, beans, dinner roll, choice of pie or almond bar, and a drink. 2019 will be quite similar.
Visiting the Historical Village of Pella will amaze you when you see over 20 buildings, some of which are close to 150 years old! You might easily spot the boyhood home of Wyatt Earp, a log cabin, blacksmith shop, grist mill, 19th century house, library with large dolls and delft displays, and an extensive collection of Dutch and early settler antiques. You may also want to tour the Vermeer Mill, built tall to capture the wind. This mill is a working, 100% wind powered grist mill, and its stone ground flour is available for purchase in the gift shop!
Don’t miss the Tulip Festival Parade where the streets will be washed down before the parade begins. We will have reserved seating for the parade – no standing for us! Other things to look for that you shouldn’t miss are the architecture of the Dutch storefronts, the Klokkenspel, and the Dutch Letters, found at the wonderful bakeries. More not-to-miss things are Pella Bologna, the Tulip Toren stage entertainment, and, of course, all the vendors with craft and food items for sale. Also, if you’re lucky, you may notice the thousands of colorful tulips that go on as far as your eye can see.
