Kalona, Iowa: Places You Have Never Been Before

September 12, 2019

There are many of us who have been to what I call the “Quilting Capital of the World”, west of the Mississippi. There are many of us who have seen the place where the Amish buggy is ordered and made, and delivered within a couple of years. There are many of us who have thoroughly enjoyed a home-made luncheon in an actual Mennonite home, too. But that was then, and this is now. Tri-State Travel is taking the very best of past trips, and has updated it to include many new things not seen or done before.

Our trip to Kalona, Iowa is planned for Thursday, September 12, 2019. It promises to include a couple of new places never toured before, as well as the best of the places we want to go. For the first time we will be offering visits to an Amish Dairy Goat Farm, and the Kalona Solar Farm. It is here where you will see the largest solar farm in the state of Iowa. It can produce enough energy to power 200 homes for an entire year. You will learn how solar energy works, and what the cost benefits are to the people of Iowa.

Did you know there is a real demand for the milk from goats? Not to mention the cheese. At the goat farm we will learn about all the ins and outs of the dairy process. How is it different from cows? Might we find soap made from goat’s milk? I think it is likely!

With these new excursions, we will also be visiting some of the well-known and well-loved places like Stringtown, the grocery store in Kalona that has almost everything, at great prices! Make your list of all those expired spices in your cabinet, and get ready for them to be replaced at pennies on the dollar. Another special location we will see is the Kalona Creamery. Another must-see in Kalona is the Golden Delight Bakery! You will simply not believe all the fresh homemade bakery items available at this stop! You will find everything, from cookies to pies to breads and everything else. I totally recommend you take an extra tote just for this visit!

One of the highlights of our trip will be to a genuine Mennonite home for a scrumptious lunch! It is here where we will be served a totally homemade luncheon, prepared by the family who resides there. I know from experience how great the food is, and I know there will be a choice of several pies for dessert!

A trip to Kalona will not be complete without a chance to do some shopping at one of the shops in town! You will not be disappointed, as we have left time for you to do just that! There are several quilt and fabric stores in the town as well as a couple of antique storefronts!

So, come along with us for a fun-filled day you won’t forget! The cost for this full day of fun and learning experiences is $99.00 per person. Please call Deb at 563-359-1682 and make your reservation now.
