Explore the Arts at the Figge

February 27, 2020 @ 6:30 pm

If you try to look up the word “Creality” in the dictionary, you won’t find it. Nor can Alexa, Siri, or even Google give you a definition. So what is it? Your Plus 60 Club is working with the Figge Art Museum to allow everyone to explore the new world of art. We will be opening up opportunities that view things in our everyday lives we hadn’t previously thought of as art. Thus, “Creality” is born!

Whether you already create art, like to just look at it, or wonder what actually constitutes art, this is your chance to learn more about it! For instance, have you ever thought about that cookie jar on your counter, the microwave oven, your car in the driveway, or even the shade on your lamp as being art? Probably not. In reality, none of us can walk away from this art, because it is everywhere in our world. And, believe it or not, you are a patron and an art critic, even if you don’t realize it.

Our first exploration into “Creality” will take place on Thursday evening, February 27, 2020 at the Figge Art Museum. It is there you will be introduced to the program “Henry Dreyfuss: Designs for the Modern Age”. The program will be presented by Dr. Russell Flinchum, an associate professor of Art History at North Carolina State University.

As you will learn, Dreyfuss was an influential industrial designer who was responsible for the design of the John Deere Tractor, the Western Electric Model 500 telephone, and numerous other iconic industrial designs. Either before of after Dr. Flinchum’s presentation, members will have the opportunity to explore the exceptional Dreyfuss exhibition the Figge has brought to the Quad-Cities. You will be able to examine original sketches, proposals, and many objects which are on loan from the John Deere Archives, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the Albany Institute of History and Art, and the AT&T Archive and History Center. The exhibit is amazing, and you will realize a new appreciation for all the things around us!

We will be meeting in the Figge Art Museum Lobby at 5:45 P.M. Admission is FREE, and when you sign in with your Plus 60 membership card, we will give you a $5.00 voucher which can be used towards a beverage or snack! The actual presentation begins promptly at 6:30. There is ample free parking around the area, either the ramp, the levee, or on the street. Please mark it on your calendar and join us for a fun and informative evening!

You will want to watch this space for additional explorations into “Creality”. Our ongoing series will open up all kinds of opportunities that will certainly make a difference in your life!
